About Pilates

Pilates emphasizes controlled and precise movements to improve strength, flexibility, and posture. It engages both the mind and body, promoting core stability and balanced muscle development. Through a series of exercises, Pilates, enhances body awareness, and promotes a sense of overall well-being. Pilates is resistance training which increases muscle mass and density. It promotes skeletal balance and alignment to help build core strength and stability, reduce pain, and increase joint range of motion, reduce injury, while toning and increasing flexibility. It is gentle on the joints, but challenging for every level of exerciser from special needs, to seniors, to weekend warriors, to elite athletes.

Modern Pilates has two main groups, Classical Pilates and Contemporary Pilates.

Classical Pilates follows as closely as possible to Joseph Pilates' original work, meaning his original exercises and the order in which they were performed. One exercise will seamlessly transition and flow into the next, like a dance. Classical Pilates will generally teach abdominal exercises in a “posterior tilt”, meaning that when laying on one’s back the lower spine is completely pressed into the floor, creating a tuck in the pelvis.

Contemporary Pilates is a modern approach to the traditional Pilates method. It integrates, updated techniques and equipment, offering a holistic fitness experience at enhances physical well-being. Many exercises remain the same, but a whole new collection of exercises have been added, or variations have been added allowing for injury rehabilitation and creativity by the instructor.  Contemporary Pilates will generally teach exercises in a “neutral pelvis” or the position one’s spine is in when standing upright in a healthy posture.
